We sure could use a nice warm building for our meetings!
SHELTER PROJECT
The Friends of Blue Mound State Park have begun the process of designing, fund-raising and building an all season shelter and learning center for the park. This will be a significant building with year round accessible facilities for all outdoor activities and related teaching and learning opportunities. Plans include radiant floor heat, fireplace or wood stove, and flush toilets. With the goal of facilitating youth and family outdoor activity in all seasons, the Friends plan to construct a building that provides not just shelter from the elements but inspiration to get out into those elements.
The Friends have made meaningful progress towards this goal. The site has been surveyed. The DNR has granted a number of preliminary approvals, and an architect has been selected from among four excellent proposals. Preliminary designs are being worked on. The Friends have already raised about 25% of the funds that will be necessary to complete the project, primarily through their promotion of the Horribly Hilly Hundreds Bike Tour, the Trail Runs, firewood sales at the park, grant applications and pro bono donations. That said, several hundred thousands of dollars are still needed to actually build the project.
