Newport State Park, Door County WI
Newport New Visitor Center Dedication
NWS raised $230,000 to help make new structure possible. Our funds were used to make a large multipurpose interpretive "Hotz Wilderness Room" and outfit the room with furniture and state of the art electronic media for presentations. We also provided funds for a naturalist /NWS office and Nature Library. The Park now has these facilities along with the entrance and visitor station, lavatories and the Park Staff office all in one unique building next the the Park Entrance. We will use our annual meeting for a gala full day of activities. The main event open to all is the dedication with state and DNR officials as well as NWS folks at 1:30 PM. Come join us!

Hank Aaron State Trail 5k Run/Walk
The 9th Annual Hank Aaron State Trail 5k Run/Walk will be especially exciting since the “Home Run King” himself will be attending for the second time!  Compared with 995 last year, we expect a record turnout near 1,300 this year –up from 1,200 when Hank Aaron last attended in 2006!  The event also features live music, prizes and awards!  Registration begins at 7 AM, with the Run starting at 8:30 AM.

Honoring “Hammerin’ Hank” whose major league career started with the Milwaukee Braves, the Hank Aaron State Trail covers seven miles through the Menomonee Valley, linking Lake Michigan to Miller Park.  In addition to providing recreational and educational opportunities, the Trail serves as a commuting corridor between downtown Milwaukee and the western side of the city.  Over the next few years, the Trail will be extended 5½ miles via a former railway corridor beginning near Miller Park and connecting to the Oak Leaf Trail at the Milwaukee/Waukesha County Line.
Please see www.hankaaronstatetrail.org for more information on the Run/Walk and the Friends group.

For information on forming a team, please contact Robert Peschel at (414) 643-4150 or rpeschel@thesigmagroup.com.

Wildflower Hike
Join us as we venture out into the field (Crex Meadows or Fish Lake Wildlife Areas) in search of summer wildflowers. We will drive to the starting point, perhaps stopping along the way to see some roadside flowers, but will walk into the woods or meadows in search of off-the-beaten path flowers. Ample time will be allowed to take photos.

Please gather at the visitor center 10-15 minutes before the start time. We will carpool to the starting points (to be determined before the hike). It is not necessary to register for these events. The hikes may be rescheduled in case of rain.
